DRC rebels gun down 7 UN peacekeepers as effort against Ebola is halted again

The effort against Ebola has been halted again in the Democratic Republic of Congo after seven UN peacekeepers were killed in a military operation with government forces against rebels in the country’s Ebola-hit northeast.

According to Stephane Dujarric, UN spokesperson, several DRC soldiers were also killed or wounded in Wednesday’s joint operation targeting Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in the Beni region in northern Kivu.

Dujarric also revealed that an unknown number of ADF fighters were killed or wounded with ten UN peacekeepers wounded and one was still missing, he added.

He confirmed that six of the killed peacekeepers were from Malawi and one was from Tanzania.

‎”UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on all armed groups to stop “their destabilising activities” and “disarm immediately”, Dujarric said.
