Driver, conductor killed, burnt for crushing 3 in Edo

A tipper driver and his conductor were on Wednesday burnt to death in Edo State by an angry mob, after their truck crushed two people and a pregnant woman to death in an accident

According to eye witness reports, the incident happened at Osholo village in Estako East local government area, when the tipper heading towards Weppa community ran into a crowd, killing the three persons and injuring several others.

It was gathered, that members of the Osholo community descended on the duo as they tried to evacuate the dead, and move the injured people to a hospital.

The mob which descended on them reportedly killed them, threw them inside their tipper, and set fire to it.

In a reprisal attack, residents of Weppa community where the driver and conductor hail from invaded Osholo and set some houses ablaze.

The incident woulod have turned into a full blown communal clash but for the quick intervention of security agencies which stepped in.

State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ejike, who confirmed the incident, said five persons died in the incident, adding, that a combined police team was drafted to the area to stop further destruction of properties.

He described the killing of the driver and conductor as barbaric and added that investigation has commenced into the matter.
