Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, will battle five other African national teams in their bid to finally secure qualification for the 2019 FIBA Men’s World Cup in China.

The team have been drawn in Group F of the second round of the qualifiers alongside Senegal, Central African Republic, Rwanda, Ivory Coast and Mali for the China showpiece.

Nigeria were unbeaten in the first round as they raked up six wins out of six and a maximum 12 points.

The Alex Nwora side defeated Uganda, Rwanda and Mali at the indoor Sports Hall of the National stadium in Surulere, Lagos last weekend, having already secured wins over all three in Mali back in February.

FIBA on Wednesday released the 60 qualifiers worldwide for the second round of the qualifiers, and for the first time, 32 countries will feature in the men’s World Cup next year.

12 countries from the continent are into the second round and have been divided into two groups of six countries each in groups E and F.

While Group F has Nigeria and others, the Group E consists of Tunisia, Cameroon, Angola, Egypt, Morocco and Chad.

The top two from each group and a best third-place finisher will qualify for the World Cup in China, as five out of the 32 countries to compete will come from Africa.

D’Tigers play their first match against the Central African Republic on September 14, 2018.
