WAFU Cup: Eagles in must-win clash with Ghana for semi-final spot

Home-based Super Eagles have qualified for next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) after outscoring the Squirrels of Benin Republic in the qualifier.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg of the qualifier in Cotonou, the Nigerian team defeated their visitors on 2-0 at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Saturday to advance 2-1 on aggregate.

Goals from Rabiu Ali and Kingsley Eduwo in the first half and second half respectively sealed the victory for Nigeria.

After the game, the assistant coach of Benin Republic, Bide Jolarise, admitted that Nigeria fully deserved the qualification for the group stages of the CHAN competition.

“This is football but it’s a fairplay,” Bide Jolarise said in a post-match interview.

“I am a little bit satisfied but it’s a blessing because we have started football good work with the young boys. In less than five months without a league we have won some matches and I think we didn’t do badly.

“The country is doing something. We never thought we would beat Nigeria at home. It’s a short time and a good job and it will continue like that.”

The 2018 Championship will hold between January 11 to February 2 in Kenya.
