EAGLES CALL UP: No Limits On China-Based Players --Rohr

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has denied reports claiming that he has warned Nigerian players moving to China that players based in Europe will be given preference in the call for national duty.

The reports which also stated that Rohr had set a limit to the number of players that can be invited from the Chinese Super League, quoted him as saying a maximum of “three players from China would be ideal for our squad.”

But in a series of tweets on the official Twitter handle of the Super Eagles on Thursday, Rohr was quoted to have said:

“My attention has been drawn to a story quoting me as setting a limit on number of players to be invited from the Chinese League.

“I do not know where this statement credited to me came from.

“I know the media are very important partners of our football development and have a huge role to play in our success as a team.

“It’s not good for me to get used to seeing stories credited to me that I do not know anything about or read words I never said.

“I therefore implore our media friends to be more professional in this regard so we can together get Nigerian football to the top.”

There are now about seven Nigerian players plying their trade in the big paying Chinese league, including captain of the team, John Mikel Obi, Eagles striker Odion Ighalo and most-recently, Brown Ideye.

The senior national team is scheduled to play two friendly matches in March in preparation for their 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against South Africa come August.
