Eagles to play Mali, Luxembourg in Europe

Super Eagles arrive in Luxembourg City

Ahead of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has concluded plans to have the Super Eagles engage the Eagles of Mali and the National Team of Luxembourg in two international friendly matches in Europe in the next FIFA windows.

The Super Eagles will take on the Malians who are ranked 63rd in the world and 13th in Africa at the Stade Robert Diochon in Rouen, France on Friday, 27th May 2016 and then take on Luxemburg on Wednesday, 1st June 2016, at a yet to be named venue in Luxemburg.

Mali finished as runner-up at the Africa Cup of Nations in 1972, and took bronze medals at the finals in 2012 and 2013.

The Eagles of Mali have already qualified for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals, having garnered 10 points from their first four matches of the qualification series, in Group C that also has Equatorial Guinea, Benin Republic and South Sudan.

Luxemburg, which shares boarder with Belgium, France and Germany, are ranked 145th in the April FIFA rankings and have never qualified for any major tournament since their participation despite participating in the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship since 1934 and 1964 respectively.

Luxemburg last win was 1-0 victory over Greece on November 13, 2015 and have not won in their last three friendly matches, losing 2-0 to Portugal on 17 November, 2015 before falling 2-0 to Albania on March 29 and 3-0 to Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 25, 2015.
