Ike Shorunmu, immediate former Super Eagles goalkeeper coach has maintained that Nigeria still needs the experience of Vincent Enyeama to help galvanise the country’s quest of securing the 2017 Nations Cup.

Enyeama announced his retirement on his Instagram page after a protracted disagreement with Coach Sunday Oliseh who stripped him of his captaincy position and handed it over to Ahmed Musa.

“I am delighted the NFF has been able to settle the rift between Enyeama and Oliseh. Unity is needed in the Eagles to achieve success. Enyeama retired from the national team because of the rift between him and coach Oliseh”.

According to Shorunmu, Enyeama should not be forced to retire stating that goalkeepers are better while ageing.

“Assuming he was prepared to retire this soon, he would not have joined the team in Belgium. I don’t know what transpired between him and the coach; but I believe the NFF has done a good job by settling the matter. Enyeama is still needed in the Eagles,” he said.

Egypt tops the group with six points after two matches, while Nigeria sits second with four points ahead of next year’s double header between the two teams that could decide which team picks the group’s sole ticket.
