Earthquake leaves 2 dead, 22 injured in Iran

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake has hit northern Iran, Thursday, leaving 2 dead and 22 persons injured, a state media reported

Among the two dead was a 60 year old man who suffered a severe head injury and a 21 year old woman who died of heart failure, officials said.

The earthquake had reportedly started in Damavand, northeast of the Capital and spread over 10km (6.2 miles).

In November 2019, a deadly 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the northwestern province of Iran killing 6 and injuring over 300.

In February 2020, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake also terrorized the Turkey- Iran border killing 9 and leaving 37 injured.

The country witnessed one of its deadliest in November 2018 after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook Western Iran near its borders with Iraq killing over 600 people.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, where major destructive earthquakes are bound to frequently occur.
