Earthquake after shocks rattle southern Mexico as death toll rises to 90

The devastating earthquake measuring 8.1 magnitude which hit the coast province of Mexico leaving destruction in its wake has seen the death toll from the incident rise from 60 to 90.

Reports say repeated aftershocks have scared people away from many structures still standing while life has been miserable for the many who have moved outdoors in the quake-shocked city of Juchitan, where a third of the homes are reported uninhabitable.

Officials in Oaxaca and Chiapas states said thousands of houses and hundreds of schools had been damaged or destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of people were reported to be without water service.

The city on Sunday was littered with rubble from Thursday night’s magnitude 8.1 earthquake, which killed at least 90 people across southern Mexico — at least three dozen of them in Juchitan itself.

According to reports, the earthquake triggered tsunami warnings in several countries and caused people to flee into the street with buildings swayed and lights going out in Mexico City, some 650 miles from the epicenter.

Reports say the epicentre of the earthquake was 123km southwest of the town of Pijijiapan, at a depth of 70km, according to USGS.

According to Eduardo Mendoza, senior program manager for Direct Relief, the small town of Juchitan in Oaxaca state “was completely leveled.”
