IMF gives Nigeria tougher terms before any help

Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Ms. Christine Lagarde, who arrived Nigeria on Monday on a four day official visit is to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari and other senior government officials, along with business leaders, prominent women, and representatives of civil society. She will also meet with legislators.

The IMF boss is to engage the president and other economy policy makers and stakeholders in interface and discussion sessions.

She was received on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

The visit to Nigeria between 4th and 7th of January will provide the IMF an opportunity to strengthen the Fund’s partnership with the largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa.

“I look forward to productive meetings with President Buhari and his colleagues as they address important economic challenges, most importantly the impact of low oil prices,” Ms. Lagarde said ahead of her trip.

Lagarde in her assessment of the state of the economy said things are not as bad as they seem.

“Nigeria is working hard to improve its business environment, promote opportunities for growth in the private sector, and strengthen social cohesion, all areas where the government has an important role to play.”

The IMF Managing Director will leave Nigeria on the 7th for Cameroon, where she will meet President Paul Biya and his economic team, as well as private sector executives, women leaders, and other members of Cameroonian society.
