Edo 2016: Ize-Iyamu kicks off campaign with solemn promise

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu flagged off his campaign for governorship in the state with a formal declaration on Monday.

He assured people of the state that he and his team would bring a change for the better in the state, and called on them to join the PDP in forming a new government in a few months time.

He commended the youths and traditional rulers in the state for standing up to what he said has been a regime of oppression and deceipt.

Ize-Iyamu who used the ocassion to introduce his running mate, Hon John Yakubu, also promised to develop every part of the state, and not discrminate against any zone.

He said “we must restore the lost glory of Edo State. Join us to change the change. Join us to change this government of deceipt”.

The governorship hopeful who said it was a privilege and honour to fly the PDP flag, also said, “Edo people, we feel your pains, we hear your cries. That is why we are contesting.

In his address, chairman of the party in the state, Chief Dan Orbih lamented that the state governor denied the party the use of the Sam Ogbemudia stadium under the guise that he (governor) wanted to make use of it.

He described the party’s candidate, Ize-Iyamu as the political redeemer of the state, whom he said would deliver the PDP’s vision of a greater Edo State.

While calling on party faithfull and people of the state to be united behind the PDP, Chief Orbih stated that there were no more factions in the party as a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt had on Monday affirmed that Sen Ahmed Makarfi is the authentic chairman of the PDP.

According to him, this effectively relegates the reign of Sen Ali Modu Sheriff as national chairman of the party to the shelf of history.

He also called on people of the state to dismiss the ruling APC from the government house come September 10, 2016.

He stated that the decision of the governor to impose a candidate on the people od Edo state in the person of Godwin Obaseki is unacceptable, and will not stand.

He also accused the governor of withdrawing N500 million every month from the state’s account in the name of “urgent security matters”, even as he asked, “is Biko Haram in the state?”.

The event which held in Benin, the state’s capital was witnessed by a mammoth crowd of citizens from the three senatorial disticts of the state, including traditional rulers, politicians, civil society groups and the business community among others.

Prominent politicians at the event which included top PDP chieftains were a former PDP BoT chairman, Chief Tony Anenih; the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion and Chief Tom Ikimi.
