INEC asks state offices to commence distribution of unclaimed PVCs

The Situation Room, on Friday said the postponement of Edo governorship election raises more doubt on the direction of democracy under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The group, a coalition of over 70 civil society organisations said this on Friday in reaction to the postponement of Edo State governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

It described the shift as “part of a disturbing trend in the erosion of public trust in our public officers, public institutions as well a growing scepticism about the general direction of our democracy under this administration.”

In a statement by Clement Nwankwo of Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, the group noted that the security agencies by pre-empting INEC on the cancelation of the election date made a mockery of the “constitutionally guaranteed independence” of the electoral body.

According to them, the unfortunate chain of events raises some serious questions about a possible breach of the constitutionally guaranteed independence of INEC.

While the group said that it also feel the pains of the good people of Edo State over this “unwarranted assault on democracy,” it however urged all parties in the state to be peaceful as they prepare for the new election date.

The governorship seat battle is majorly between the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Godwin Obaseki and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
