The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two of its officers attached to the Chief Medical Director of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Prof. Sylvanus Okogbeni.

Unknown gunmen attacked their convoy and abducted the CMD at Ramat Park, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State on Monday, while he was returning to Benin.

Two other persons in the convoy, whose identities were yet to be ascertained, were shot in the leg.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, who made this disclosure, said investigations had been launched into the incident.

Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Universities Teaching Hospital Research Institute and Associated Institutions of Nigeria, Irrua branch, Emmanuel Igiechi, said the union would protest against insecurity in the area, adding that the abduction showed that workers at the hospital were being monitored.

“This tells us how serious the security situation has become. It is a very dire situation we are in.

“Security agencies should strengthen their presence in Irrua and its environs, as abductions and kidnappings have become rampant in this area,” he said.
