There was drama at INEC office in Benin, during announcement of results from the governorship election, as two parties refused to sign the final result sheet.

The agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chris Agbonwanegbe, and the Young Democratic Party (YDP) Memeh Joseph both said they have been instructed by their individual parties not to append their signatures to the result.

Agent of the PDP had initially expressed reservations about the results from some local government areas, which he said did not tally with the results from their agents on the field.

According to him, the results announced had been “rehearsed and produced”.

He continued, “I cannot endorse it. You said I should get ready for court instead of looking at it here and now. I cannot be a party to that”.
On his part, the agent of the YDP also refused to sign the final result sheet, noting,
“I have the mandate of the Young Democratic Party not to append my signature on this result sheet,” he said.

However, the Chief returning Officer, Prof Kayode Shoremekun went ahead to declared Godwin Obaseki,  candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the election and governor-elect for Edo state.

Obaseki, coasted home to victory with a total of 319,483 votes, beating his closest opponent, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the PDP who polled 253,173 votes.

According to Prof. Shoremekun the total number of registered voters for the election was 1,900,223, while number of accredited voters for the election was 622,039.

Total votes cast were 613, 244. But total valid votes were 582,299 while rejected votes were 30, 955
