EFCC probes MTN's listing on NSE

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dissociated its acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu from comments allegedly made by him in an audio recording currently in circulation about the immediate past governor of Ekiti State, Peter Ayodele Fayose.

The EFCC, in a statement by its spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, on Thursday, said the agency, “wishes to alert the general public about an audio recording of a conversation currently circulating in the social media, In which the Acting Chairman of the Commission, Ibrahim Magu, purportedly made comments to the effect that, nothing will happen peradventure Ayo Fayose, former governor of Ekiti State, dies in custody.

“Interestingly, the audio tape did not disclose the place where the conversation occurred and the person that Magu was supposedly talking to.”

Uwujaren called on members of the public to disregard this disingenuous creation, insisting that it is the handiwork of mischief makers whose purpose is to distract the Commission from the serious work of wrapping up the investigation into the corruption allegations.

“The audio recording is fake as the comments did not emanate from the Chairman of the EFCC. Purveyors of this fake news especially a former spokesperson of a leading political party are warned to desist”, Uwajuren said.

It would be recalled that Rivers State governor, Nyesome Wike, had on Tuesday raised the alarm that Fayose might be harmed in EFCC custody.

Wike said: “He is hale and hearty, and I believe that the EFCC should know he is well, I fear that the intelligence report we have is that he may be harmed.

“We want to let Nigerians know, that he came himself to EFCC, without any body harassing him, that’s why I brought him here today.”
