EFCC files fresh charges against Fani Kayode

In what looks like a move to nail the former Minister of Aviation, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has filed fresh money laundering charges against him.

The Director of Media and Publicity in the campaign organisation of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, who is already standing trial along a former Finance Minister, Nenadi Usman; Danjuma Yusuf and a firm, Joint Trust Dimension Nig. Ltd on 17 counts of laundering N4.9 billion before the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court, has remained a vocal critic of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The suit containing five fresh counts charges numbered, FHC/ABJ/CR/140/2016, were filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja and Fani-Kayode is the sole defendant.

He is accused this time by the EFCC of allegedly diverting N26m received from the Office of the former National Security Adviser (ONSA) Sambo Dasuki and handling the said N26m without going through financial institution as required under the Money Laundering Act.

The case came up before Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday.

The prosecution was absent at the proceedings as well as Fani-Kayode, though the latter was represented by a team of lawyers led by Mr Wale Balogun.

Balogun who questioned what could have led the prosecution who filed the charges not to be aware of the proceedings, complained that his client was yet to be served with the charges as required and demanded for an adjournment.

The judge adjourned the case till November 10 for arraignment and ordered that hearing notice be served on the EFCC.
