EFCC to quiz Fani-Kayode, Odumakin over fake news on CJN Onnoghen
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and Afenifere Spokesman, Yinka Odumakin, would have to explain the reason they spread news that turned out to be false.
According to Tony Orilade, the two politicians were asked to appear to explain their actions because the news they spread could injure the country’s interest.
Fani-Kayode and Odumakin had in separate post on their social media handles on Tuesday claimed that the EFCC had surrounded the residence of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen.
Onnoghen is being accused by the Federal Government of false asset declaration and has been dragged before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
However, the claims by the two politicians turned out to be lies. Even Justice Onnoghen had since denied that the EFCC operatives were at his home on Tuesday.
Fani-Kayode had in a post early on Wednesday morning on his Facebook wall apologised for spreading the news.
He however claimed that some men actually surrounded Onnoghen’s home but he has since “discovered that the men were not from EFCC and I removed the posting. The error is regretted.”
But Orilade, who spoke at the conference of Online Publishers Association of Nigeria in Abuja, insisted that Fani-Kayode and Odumakin may be kept in EFCC custody except they disclose useful information on why they spread such news.
Fani-Kayode, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, had also recently claimed that a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, slumped, and was rushed to hospital after President Muhammadu Buhari announced him as co-chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
That news also turned out to be a lie.
