Egypt appoints first female governor after cabinet reshuffle

For the first time in the history of Egypt, a female governor has been appointed into office in the Governorate of Beheira, in the Nile Delta after a cabinet reshuffle.

Nadia Ahmed Abdou, an engineer with a long record of public service known for her force decision-making powers which earned her the nickname “iron woman” is now the first female governor of Egypt.

The female governor was sworn in along with four new governors and nine new ministers to the cabinet of Prime Minister Sherif Ismail on Thursday.

Her appointment as a governor sharply contrasts with Egypt’s tradition of naming retired military or police personnel as governors, particularly of states with international borders.

The new appointees especially the ministers are set to join the government to oversee agriculture, parliamentary affairs, investment and international cooperation, trade, local development, planning, education, higher education and transport.
