Egyptian court sentences 10 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death

No less than 10 people who were convicted of forming a terrorist group and planning attacks on police and security forces have been sentenced to death by a court in Egypt.

Judicial sources say five of the men who were convicted for being supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood which was banned in Egypt after the 2013 overthrow of former President Mohamed Morsi, were sentenced to life in prison.

Reports say three of the sentences were passed in absentia and Saturday’s rulings can be appealed following the referral of the death sentence to the Grand Mufti, Egypt’s highest Sunni Muslim authority.

Since the year 2013, hundreds of Islamists, including Muslim Brotherhood supporters and members, have received death sentences as Egypt has carried out dozens of executions, according to security sources and rights groups.
