Egyptian court sentences 13 members of militant group to death

A Cairo criminal court has sentenced 13 members of a disbanded militant group known as Ajnad Misr, to death after they were all convicted of launching attacks on security forces.

After its judgement, the court referred its sentencing recommendation to the Grand Mufti, the country’s top religious authority, for a non-binding but legally required opinion.

Once that is received, the court will then formally announce its verdict on Dec. 7, after which time the sentence can be carried out.

Last month, an Egyptian court also ruled in the case of ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi who was sentenced to 25-years behind bars after he was accused of spying for Qatar.

Morsi’s latest sentence comes after the toppled president was sentenced to 15 years in prison along with other defendants in June last year following mass protests against his rule which saw him ousted from office.
