Eight killed in stampede in Senegalese stadium

Eight people have been reportedly killed in a stampede at a stadium in the Senegalese capital Dakar on Saturday.

The disaster happened during a match between two local teams, US Ouakam and Stade de Mbour.

A fight broke out between fans of the rivals and police fired tear gas to break it up. The resulting confusion triggered the stampede.

The incidence was thus reported to Reuters by the nation’s Sports Minister, Matar Ba by telephone.

Deadly stampedes at football matches have been common in Africa, where safety standards are low.

At least 17 people died and scores were injured in a stampede in a match in Angola in February, when hundreds of supporters stormed the stadium.
