Eight Nigerian athletes banned for doping

Eight Nigerian athletes have been banned by the Nigeria Olympics Committee for testing positive for ban substances at the 2015 All African Games.

The athletes are Deborah Odeyemi, Chinazom Amadi and Samson Idiata (Athletics). Others are Sunday Ezeh (Para-athletics), Thomas Kure (Para-lifting), Patient Opene (Wrestling), Ebi James Igbadiwei (Wrestling) and Elizabeth Owuah (Weightlifting).

All the athletes got four years ban except for Elizabeth Owuah who got eight years.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, on Thursday in Abuja confirmed that the athletes are ruled out of the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil and have been banned for four to eight years.

“About five medals have been indicted with eight athletes testing positive to ban substances.
“We want to intensify advocacy on the issue of anti-doping

“This doping has to do with nutrition of an athlete it is very important to do more advocacy on sport so when we get to Rio we will not have this instances again,” Dalung said.

The International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have been very pragmatic in the fight against doping in recent times following the scandal that rocked Russian Athletes who manipulated their results after testing positive for banned substances.
