ZAMFARA: Supreme Court has saved Nigeria from constitutional crisis - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the concerns raised by former President Olusegun Obasanjo about President Muhammadu Buhari have vindicated its position on the current government’s alleged self-succession plot.

The party, therefore, warned that failure of Nigerians to use their votes to remove the Buhari-led administration in the February 16 presidential election could amount to “giving up our nation to totalitarian forces at our own peril and those of generations yet unborn.”

Obasanjo, who compared Buhari’s government to that of late General Sani Abacha’s military rulership, had among other things accused Buhari of scheming ahead the coming presidential election, to use apparatus of state power to subjugate Nigerians, undermine the country’s democratic system, subvert the electoral process and perpetuate himself in office.

Director, Media and Publicity, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Kola Ologbondiyan, said in a statement on Sunday that Obasanjo’s submission also reinforced the opposition party’s position that President Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have realized that there is no way he could win in a free and fair election.

“The whole world can see how President Buhari and APC’s desperation for power is putting the lives of over 200 million Nigerian citizens at great risk as their actions stoke violence and push our dear nation to the precipice.

“We are however not surprised that the APC, a party that has shown that it is completely anti-people, quickly rose in defence of the Buhari Presidency’s assault on our democratic order. The APC has always been a deceptive soulless mob that would rather have our nation burn than to be out of power.

“President Obasanjo’s concern is therefore a clarion call to all compatriots, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliations to rise in defence of our democracy,” Ologbondiyan said.

He called on Nigerians not to allow anybody to set the nation on fire just for selfish ambitions.

“We must eschew all our differences and unite in using our votes to take back our country from this dwindling, incompetent, ineffectual, corrupt and anti-people administration.

“If we don’t take action with our votes, we would be giving up our nation to totalitarian forces at our own peril and those of generations yet unborn,” he said.

The party had also in a separate statement also on Sunday described President Buhari’s alleged fixation on its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar’s trip to the United States, as defeatist and smacking of a pre-defeat hallucination.

The party said, “Buhari Presidency should hide its face in shame that after spending billions of naira in propaganda to stop the trip, Atiku Abubakar freely traveled to the United States, where unlike President Buhari’s wasteful trips, he engaged in fruitful sessions with critical international business entities on ways to revamp our economy ruined by President Buhari.”

It added, “President Buhari and the APC were so disturbed about Atiku Abubakar’s acceptance by the international community that they wasted billions of naira from the coffers of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to organize a failed protest in the United States.

“When that failed, they attempted to use the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to threaten and level spurious allegations against Atiku Abubakar, which also came to naught, as the entire world saw through the fabrications.”
