EKITI: 1 policeman killed, another wounded in bank robbery attack

Social and economic activities in the Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State were disrupted Thursday when a gang of robbers attacked a bank located in the Ifaki-Ekiti area of the state.

Reports say the attack on a branch of First Bank Pic, was witnessed the killing of a police officer, while another mobile police officer who was on duty at the bank premises escaped with injuries.

An eyewitness who declined to be named said the robbers who struck at about 4:00pm after the bank had closed for the day, destroyed the bank’s Automated Teller Machine point and shattered the glass at the bank entrance with bullets.

The witness said; “It was a terrible experience for us in Ifaki today. Our area became a war zone with endless gunshots fired by the robbers.

“Although they didn’t succeed in entering the bank, they killed one MOPOL (mobile policeman). His colleague, who was also shot, was rushed to a hospital.

“They shattered the glasses used to decorate the front of the bank and they destroyed the ATM point. Although the robbers have left, there is panic in the town.”

The attack on the bank was confirmed by Mr Abdullahi Chafe, the state Commissioner of Police who revealed that investigations into the bank attack was ongoing.

The CP said, “I cannot give you details on the incident now because we are in a meeting. We will give full details in due course.”
