Ekiti govt orders closure of major markets to stem spread of COVID-19

The Ekiti State government led has ordered the closure of major markets in the state to stem the spread of COVID-19 which has claimed over 20 lives in the country thus far.

Special Advisers to the state Governor on Public Affairs and Media, Chief Nyi Ojo, and Mrs Mary Osho-Omotosho, respectively, said in Ado Ekiti, on Tuesday at a media enlightenment forum that the order affects all the major markets, in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital and Ikere Ekiti, the next largest town.

The government disclosed that the measure became necessary in order to contain and curtail the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the state and the need to fully enforce the social distancing order in such places.

The new order would take full effect, on Thursday, when government was expected to relax current curfew, and allow residents in the state to move about between 6:00am-2:00pm.

This order by the Ekiti State government comes after the Osun State government led by Governor Gboyega Oyetola moved to ensure total compliance with its lockdown directive by mounting barricades at all boundaries and major roads of the state.

This was revealed in a statement on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Ismail Omipidan, and the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs. Funke Egbemode.

The statement noted that the step is imperative to enforce compliance to 14 days total lockdown directive issued by the state government to curtail the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
