Ekiti rumbles as Assembly impeaches Dep Speaker

Lawmakers of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Thursday impeached the deputy speaker, Hon Segun Adewunmi.

This is coming less than two months to the governorship election scheduled to hold on July 14.

Impeached along Adewumi during the House’s Thursday plenary was the Chief Whip, Hon. Akinniyi Sunday.

The lawmakers subsequently elected Animasaun Adesina, representing Ekiti west Constituency 11, as deputy speaker, while the member representing Ekiti South West constituency 1, Onigiobi Olawale was appointed as the new Chief Whip.

The removal of the former deputy speaker followed a motion moved by the Leader of House, Akinyele Olatunji and seconded by Hon. Olayanju Olanrewaju.

Olatunji had in the motion accused Adewumi of indulging in activities capable of bringing the dignity and integrity of the House to disrepute.

Speaking on the development, the Speaker of the Assembly, Kola Oluwawole said that 18 members of the Assembly signed the notice of impeachment of the deputy speaker in line with section 92 (2c) of the 1999 constitution as amended.

Among other things the impeached deputy speaker was accused of “gross misconduct, lack of leadership quality and acting in a way that could destabilize the state.”
