El-Kanemi climb to second, Rangers suffer derby defeat

El-kanemi Warriors beat Rivers United 2-1 in one of the matchday 21 clashes of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) which saw a total of 23 goals scored across the nation.

The Maiduguri side continued their impressive home form as they overtook MFM into second place in the league table on 36 points.

Samuel Mathias converted a 10th minute penalty to put the home team ahead. Bala Yahuza made it 2-0 in the 81st minute, before Rivers United’s Onoriode Odah scored a consolation in stoppage time.

Nigeria champions, Rangers International, were thrashed 4-0 in the Oriental derby against Abia Warriors.

Sunday Adetunji scored a brace, as Anthony Okemmiri and Obi Samson completed the four-goal home victory.

Elsewhere, MFM lost 3-0 to Niger Tornadoes, as goals from Wilfred Ammeh and Wikili Abdullahi sank the Lagos club, who were without Stephen Odey and Sikiru Olatunbosun.

Plateau United maintained the summit with a 1-0 victory against bottom club Remo Stars, with Hamzat Owolabi scoring the only goal of the game, firing Plateau to 39 points.

In the other clashes, IfeanyiUbah secured acomfortable 2-0 win over Kano Pillars. Nasarawa United overcame Wikki Tourists 2-0, Akwa United defeated ABS 3-0, Enyimba were beaten 1-0 by Sunshine Stars, Gombe United secured a 1-0 home win against Katsina United, while Shooting Stars suffered a 3-0 loss to Lobi Stars in Makurdi.
