El-Rufai imposes fresh 24-hour curfew in troubled S’Kaduna

Kaduna State Security Council has following fresh attacks in Jema’a and Kaura local government areas of southern Kaduna State, declared a 24-hour curfew with immediate effect.

Different communities in the two local government areas were invaded by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Sunday and Monday killing not less than 14 people and burning down several homes.

The number of casualties in the Sunday attack, which happened in Bakin Kogi, Kaninkon Village, in Jema’a LGA at about 5:30pm were uncertain, as security operatives reportedly repelled the attackers.

The Monday attack on Ashim village, Takad chiefdom of Kaura LGA, happened about 12 hours after the Jema’a attack. 14 persons were reportedly killed, many injured while several properties were destroyed.

Announcing the curfew in a statement, Samuel Aruwan, Special Assistant to Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Media and Publicity on Tuesday, said the action became necessary to protect lives and properties and to avoid further breakdown of law and order.

According to Aruwan, all security agencies on special operation in the two LGAs have been directed to ensure strict compliance.

He said, “Only essential workers and those on humanitarian services are allowed movement after due clearance by security agencies.”

Following incessant attacks in southern part of Kaduna, security operatives were said to have been deployed in the area to curtail the attacks said to always target Christian indigenes of the area.

The Sunday and Monday attacks took place in spite the presence of these security men.
