Electricity Regulatory Commission chair nominee turns down offer

The board chairman nominee for the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has finally declined the offer.

After weeks of speculations over his disposition, Prof. AKintunde Akinwande yesterday failed to turn up before a Senate panel for screening. It was the second time.

The United States-based don had been avoiding the screening esince October when his name was forwarded to the Senate by the President.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, had initially explained Akinwade’s failure to turn up for screening, saying he needed to obtain clearance from his employers in the United States.

The don, who teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (MIT) Boston, did not make any official statement.

However, the picture became clearer yesterday when Akinwande again failed to turn up for the screening conducted by the Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe led committee.

A member of the committee, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi said Akinwande had sent a personal message to decline the offer.
