ENUGU GUBER: APC has no power to determine whether or not election should hold, coalition fires back

Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) in Enugu state has reacted to the All Progressive Congress’ call for postponement of the governorship election and the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

CRPP defined APC’s allegations against the REC as false and baseless.

While addressing newsmen, the group insisted that the election must hold in the state and that APC should not use its internal wrangling to disrupt the electoral process.

The chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the APC, Ben Nwoye, on Thursday, led supporters of the party to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in the state, demanding the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Emeka Ononamadu, over alleged bias.

Nwoye called on the REC to tender his resignation letter or face stiff opposition in the Saturday’s election. He called on the national chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and other relevant authorities to facilitate the removal of Ononamadu as the state REC.

The CRPP has however fired back at APC, stating that APC is not the only registered political party in the country and has no power to determine whether an election should hold or not.

Public Relations Officer of the CRPP, Hon. Afam Ani who spoke on behalf of the group said, “Enugu is the most peaceful state in the country. The REC Mr Emeka Ononamadu is the friendliest REC we have had in Enugu.

“We have been witnessing the coming and going of RECs in Enugu but this one has been here discharging his duty as is stipulated in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The REC should not be removed because he has not done anything contrary to the constitution of Nigeria that demands for his removed. The election must go on as scheduled.

“We say no tyrants and their propaganda because it will not stand. The APC should go on with their campaign to convince people to vote for them.” he said.
