ENUGU: Meat consumers groan as abattoirs comply with Miyetti Allah directive

Published

Hoteliers, restaurateurs and other consumers of beef, tomatoes and other perishable products were on Wednesday stranded in different markets in Enugu State.

The development came as abattoirs and perishable goods dealers’ shops in the state, especially tomatoes, closed for business.

Butchers and perishable goods dealers had closed their businesses in compliance with a directive by the Enugu State Amalgamated Market Traders Association (ESAMATA) and Enugu State Butchers Association (ESBA).

Hoteliers, restaurateurs and others, who had gone to markets to purchase such products, were stranded following their inability to purchase meat, especially beef, as well as tomatoes and other perishable goods, for their use and businesses.

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and Northern Leaders of Livestock and Perishable Goods Market, had ordered for the close of the businesses to enable them embark on a sensitisation tour to their members on insecurity issues.

It was learnt that following recent spate of insecurity in the state, there had been propaganda that the Fulani community had an ulterior motive in the state.

The Fulani in the state were also said to have been afraid of the security situation in the state and would want to secure their businesses.

Consequently, the president of ESAMATA, Temple Ude, and his ESBA counterpart, Osita Nnamani, on Saturday released a joint statement, announcing that there would not be commercial activities on August 14 and 15, 2019 in livestock and perishable goods markets in the state.

The public were also informed that the two days would be used for the sensitisation exercise.
