EPL: Arsenal climb to 5th with win over Southampton

Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud fired Arsenal to 5th position on the English Premier League table after their goals helped secure a 2-0 victory against Southampton on Wednesday night.

The win takes the Gunners above Manchester United, and three points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

Sanchez opened the scoring for the visitors when he wrong-footed two defenders in the box before calmly slotting home on the hour mark, before substitute Giroud made 2-0 by nodding in from close range minutes after coming on pitch.

Southampton’s best chance came in the first half when Manolo Gabbiadini forced a fine save out of Arsenal’s Petr Cech from close range, but they stay 10th on the log.

Speaking after the game, Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, said his team “were focused” and “dynamic”, that they “showed a convincing desire to win the game.”

“We have another clean sheet and I know we can go forward and score goals,” he added.

His counterpart, Claude Puel, expressed his disappointment, saying: “It’s often the same against the big six. We cannot find a win. Every time we play good quality football with chances but without the clinical edge and it’s harsh on the players.”

Arsenal ended a run of five winless Premier League games at St Mary’s, claiming their first win there since December 2003.
