EPL: Man City beat Southampton to climb to third

Manchester City strengthened their hopes of a top-four Premier League finish as their big 3-0 win against a Southampton side has seen them climb to third on Saturday.

Skipper Vincent Kompany opened the scoring in the 55th minute when he headed David Silva’s left-wing corner past the keeper. Leroy Sane drilled in Kevin de Bruyne’s pass after a quick counter, with Sergio Aguero’s 80th-minute far-post volley sealing it.

Pep Guardiola’s side are now on 64 points, five points clear of fifth-placed Everton and a point above Liverpool, who play West Brom on Sunday.

“Congratulations to the team, especially the way we played,” Guardiola said after the win.

“We were able finally to make 15, 20, 25 passes in a row. Up front we could be better but our quality of play meant we had control.

“This result is so important for our qualification for the Champions League,” he added.

Claude Puel’s side, who were bidding for three successive league wins for the first time under the Frenchman, remain in ninth place.

“In the second half they scored two goals on the counter-attack, but I thought we could have done better today,” Puel lamented.

“It’s a disappointment because we can do better, we can create better opportunities. We did not have enough today, we were not sufficient. It was not a good day for us, but congratulations to Manchester City,” he added.
