EPL: Top-four race extends to final day as Arsenal, Man City win

Arsenal have ensured the top-four race goes down to the final day of the English Premier League season this weekend after beating already relegated Sunderland 2-0 at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

After a goalless first half, Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in the 72nd minute when he tapped in Mesut Ozil’s square pass, before making it a brace for himself about tem minutes later.

The Arsene Wenger’s men are now a point behind fourth-placed Liverpool ahead of Sunday’s final matches, and must beat seventh-placed Everton – and hope the Reds slip up against Middlesbrough at Anfield – to make top four.

In the other league game of Tuesday, Manchester City may have secured a Champions League place for next season with a 3-1 victory over West Brom at the Etihad Stadium.

Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring with an easy tap-in from Kevin de Bruyne’s pass after 27 minutes. And less than two minutes later, the Brazilian poked the ball back for De Bruyne, who sent a sublime curling effort past Foster from about 20 yards.

Yaya Toure added a third 10 minutes into the second half, before Hal Robson-Kanu pulled one back for the visitors three minutes from time.

The Pep Guardiola’s side are now third on the log on 75 points and have a three-point and five-goal cushion over fifth-placed Arsenal.

They’ll therefore be sure of a top four finish if they can avoid a heavy defeat when they travel to Watford in their last game of the season on Sunday.
