To escape impeachment, Anambra Assembly Speaker vanishes with mace

It was drama on Thursday at the Anambra State House of Assembly as Speaker, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu, surreptitiously vanished into thin air with the mace to avoid impending impeachment by members.

The Speaker reportedly escaped with the Assembly symbol of authority when it became obvious that the members were hell bent on ensuring her ejection.

About 28 Assembly members were said to have arrived at the state legislative building prepared for the day’s business.

It was learnt that there was rowdiness in the Assembly over the intention to remove the Speaker to a point that the state Governor Willie Obiano came into the Assembly complex to pacify them.

Efforts made by the governor to persuade and deter the 28 members who were All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) members was said to have been rebuffed by the angry members.

The frightened Speaker, as learnt, saw that the members were resolute in their mission and then secretly ran away with the mace.

To the chagrin of the members, the Speaker was nowhere to be found when the bell signifying her coming into the chambers rang for countless times.

Sequel to this dramatic event, the majority leader, Victor Okoye, was said to have moved for the adjournment of the house to Tuesday, April 11.
