EU ambassador expelled from DRC ahead of polls

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have expelled European Union Ambassador Bart Ouvry ahead of the December 30 general elections.

Reports say the move was taken in response to the recent renewal of EU sanctions against Congolese officials including the ruling coalition’s candidate.

The development was announced by the Foreign Ministry after a meeting with foreign ambassadors in Kinshasa.

According to reports, the decision comes two years after sanctions were first imposed, and just three days before the long-anticipated election is due to take place.
