Spain have advanced to the semifinals of the Euro 2020 tournament after defeating Switzerland on penalties on Friday evening.

Three-time champions Spain survived a scare to scale through as a Xherdan Shaqiri 68th-minute equaliser piled up pressure.

Spain had gotten ahead of the Swiss from eight minutes when Dennis Zakaria scored an own goal.

But Switzerland were soon reduced to 10 men as Remo Freuler was shown a red card on 77 minutes, with both sides holding on at 1-1 to force the game into extra time, and into shootouts.

Switzerland, who had knocked out favourites France in the round of 16 via penalty shootouts, missed three spot kicks on Friday which ultimately proved costly.

The victory for Spain in St. Petersburg means they face either Belgium or Italy in the last four.

Belgium versus Italy is the other quarterfinal clash billed for later on Friday.

The winner of the tie will set up a meeting with Luis Enrique’s side next week Tuesday at Wembley.
