EUROPA: Rashford scores winner as Man United edge Celta Vigo

English Premier League side, Manchester United, are on the brink of reaching the UEFA Europa League final after Marcus Rashford converted a superb free-kick to put them in control of their semi-final against Celta Vigo on Thursday night.

The 19-year-old striker’s curling effort not only gave United the lead, but also a precious away goal going into next Thursday’s second leg at Old Trafford, as they continue their quest for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Manager Jose Mourinho hailed his wonder kid who has stepped up in the absence of top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic due to injury.

“He’s a 19-year-old kid in love with football,” Mourinho said after the win.

“He works, he’s mature and what matters is not his age but his quality.”

The Jose Mourinho’s side will be strong favourites to progress to face Ajax or Lyon in Stockholm on 24 May in the final of a competition they have never won.

Celta Vigo failed to rise to the challenge of their first ever European semifinal, but they did have many chance throughout the game, but couldn’t convert any of them.

The Spanish side had once overcome losing the first leg 1-0 at home in their last 32 tie against Shakhtar Donetsk, as they won 2-0 away to advance to the next round. They will only hope to repeat the feat in order to reach the final.

The return leg of the tie is next Thursday at Old Trafford.

“Let’s hope Old Trafford want us to win because when Old Trafford wants it, we win,” added Mourinho.
