Sarri reacts to defeat at Everton as Chelsea’s top-four hopes dented

Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri says he cannot explain what happened on the pitch as Chelsea lost 2-0 to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Blues got their hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League dented by the loss despite dominating the first half.

After a goalless but interesting first half, the hosts got ahead four minutes after the break as Richarlison headed in following a corner.

Richarlison was then brought down in the penalty box by Marcos Alonso in the 71st minute before Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the rebound from his own penalty to seal the win.

“I don’t know and the players don’t know what happened in the second half,” the Italian said after the game.

“I cannot explain it. We played the best first half in the season and we could have scored four or five and then suddenly we stopped playing.

“It’s very strange and we stopped to defend and counter attack.

“We were in control of the match and we played very well so we needed continue but we didn’t defend at the start of the second half. We changed the system but it was the same.

“The problem was mental on the pitch, so the system and the tactics are not important.

“It wasn’t about motivation because we started very well. We have to play eight matches now and we have to fight for our possibilities.”

Chelsea still sit sixth in the Premier League table, a point behind Manchester United, who they would have leapfrogged had they won at Everton.
