Everton stun Man City in 4-0 win

Everton in a brilliant performance on Sunday stunned Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City after beating the visitors 4-0 at Goodison Park.

City has now lost three of their last four matches away, with the latest setback for Guardiola coming at the hands of a team managed by his former Barcelona teammate, Ronald Koeman.

The Toffees soaked up 71% of City possession but restricted them to few chances and scored with four of just six attempts at goal, by Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas, 18-year-old midfielder Tom Davies and 19-year-old Nigerian debutant Ademola Lookman.

Lukaku opened the scoring in the 34th minute, the only goal before half-time. A minute into the second half, Mirallas brilliantly drilled Lukaku’s through-ball into the opposition net. Davies made it three for the home team in 79 minutes, after which Lookman fired between the legs of the keeper in injury time.

City lacked cutting edge throughout the game to suffer their fifth league defeat of the season, but stay fifth, 10 points off leaders Chelsea, while Everton remain seventh.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman pointed at his side’s early goals as the reason for their victory over the visitors.

“We scored at the right time in the first half and then to score straight after half-time made it very difficult for them,” he said after the match.

“I think it is a big compliment to Everton today – the organisation defensively. It makes the final result and the way we played perfect,” he added.

City will host second-placed Tottenham on Saturday, shortly after Everton seek their second away win in eight matches when they play at Crystal Palace on the same day.
