Ex-football star George Weah elected as Liberia’s new president

Liberia in first peaceful democratic transfer of power as Weah is sworn in as president

Former footballer George Opong Weah has been elected as the new president of Liberia after a peaceful presidential runoff between him and Vice President Joseph Boakai.

Weah won comprehensively, clinching 12 of the 15 counties in the West African country in an election characterised by low voter turn out.

The former AC Milan soccer star who is the first African to win the Ballon D’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year will now succeed Nobel Peace Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who beat Weah in an election back in 2005.

Nearly 2.2 million Liberians casted their votes and are now looking forward to a new future with Weah who has promised rapid socio-economic transformation under his leadership.
