Ex-Gov Aliyu in EFCC detention over alleged N5.6bn fraud

There are emerging reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Niger State governor, Babangida Aliyu.

Aliyu it was learnt is undergoing interrogation over what may have happened to the sum of N3.6billion cash the state realised during his reign from the sale of 16, out of its 26 per cent stake in North South Power Ltd , and the N2billion from the Ecological Fund it got from the Presidency in 2015.
Put together, the monies amounts to N5.6billion.

The EFCC suspects that the monies may have been laundered by the former governor and may have been likely used to enthrone one of his protégés during the 2015 governorship election.

The anti-graft agency is said to have, following this suspicion, detained Aliu to interrogate him on his knowledge of the missing money.

Ripples Nigeria learnt that Aliyu, who arrived the headquarters of the EFCC around 10:am on Tuesday to honour its invitation, had remained in the commission’s custody and had been providing answers to questions from a crack team of the anti-graft agency since arrival.

He was still with the agency as at the time of this report.
