Ex-Gov Lamido remanded in in prison till May 4

The embattled former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has been remanded in prison till May 4 by the state’s Chief Magistrate Court.

He was remanded on Tuesday after he was transported to Dutse, the state capital, by the Nigeria Police Zone 1, Kano State in the early hours of the same day.

The court which was presided over by Chief Magistrate Muhammad Lamin, refused to grant the accused bail and adjourned the case till May 4 for continuation.

The immediate past governor of Jigawa State is being tried on a four-count charge of inciting public disturbance, defamation of character, criminal intimidation and disturbance of public peace.

The offences violated sections 113, 114, 392 and 394 of the Penal Code.

However, counsels to the accused Yakubu Ruba and Felix Jones, who contended that the offences were bail-able, questioned why the court refused to grant the accused bail.

The former governor was arrested in Kano on Sunday sequel to a petition by the state government that he made a statement capable of causing havoc in the state’s coming local government election slated to hold on July 1.

The governor is alleging that he is being persecuted for his 2019 political ambition.
