A former national publicity secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Olisa Metuh on Monday collapsed in court.

Metuh who was making his way to the dock in his ongoing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) fell to the floor and had to be rushed by those present.

Metuh was already seated in the courtroom close to the dock before the trial judge, Justice Okon Abang, when the incident happened at about 9.00am.

Following the event the judge stood down the matter to enable medical officials attend to the defendant.

Metuh is being tried alongside his company, Destra Investment Limited, by the EFCC over alleged N400 million he was said to have received from the Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014.

The former PDP spokesman’s case was the first on the list of cases before Justice Abang, of the Delta State Division of the Federal High Court, Warri, who came to the Abuja Division to hear Metuh’s matter and other criminal cases assigned to him in Abuja.

When the trail resumed after the incident, Justice Abang called for the trial to continue, warranting Metuh’s counsel, Emeka Etiaba (SAN), to announce his withdrawal from the case.

Etiaba said, “It will be against all procedure of trial to say I want to continue when my client is lying down and I don’t know whether he is dead or alive.”

In his response Abang described the statement as an “attempt to delay this trial”.

But Etiaba who although was still present at the court, maintained that he had withdrawn from the case, and refused to make further contributions.
