Exiled Jammeh accused of stealing $11m during last days in office

Former long-serving Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh, has been accused of stealing state funds to the tune of $11 million in his last week as President of the tiny West African country.

According to an aide of newly elected Adama Barrow, Jammeh also shipped out luxury vehicles by cargo plane with more revelation underway as regional troops prepare to secure arrival of President-elect Barrow.

According to Barrow’s adviser Mai Fatty, the new administration had discovered that millions of dollars had recently been stolen.

“The coffers are largely empty,” he told reporters in the Sengalese capital, Dakar.

“Over two weeks, over 500m dalasi ($11 million) were withdrawn” by Jammeh, he said. “As we take over, the government of The Gambia is in financial distress.”

Jammeh, who ruled the small West African country for 22 years, flew into exile late on Saturday to Equatorial Guinea. He will not just be remembered for his tight hold on power but his several claims to spiritual healing powers with which he lured ordinary Gambians, promising cure for illnesses such as high blood pressure and HIV AIDS.
