Explosions, arrests, low turn out mark Enugu LG elections

The Local Government council elections in Enugu state were conducted today as two separate explosions almost marred the exercise.

Several people were also arrested in connection to the explosions, as no deaths was recorded, but there were several casualties.

The polls was conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC.

The explosions, from two Improvised Electrical Devices (IED) went off near polling units in the state.

The two locations were at Coal Camp motor part spare market in Ogbete, Enugu North local government and Obeagu, Enugu south local government.

Three suspects were arrested by the police at the Enugu south explosion and are being interogated.

The election which was marked by poor turnout of voters in some parts of the state, especially the Enugu metropolis, also experienced late arrival of election materials.

Governor of the state, Ifea‎nyi Ugwuanyi cast his vote around 11:30am at his ward, Amube ward 2, pulling unit 1 and 2.

At Oji River local government area, there was an incident which almost marred the exercise, some party faithfuls reportedly blocked the entrance to the council office insisting that result sheets must be presented before anything could take place.

The Enugu state Police command assured residents that the incident of minor explosions‎ did not interfere with the voting activities at the polling Centre.

Enugu police spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu who confirmed the incidents said ‎no life was lost, and that operatives of the Explosive Ordinance Department were on hand to conduct analysis with a view to finding out the possible cause of the explosion.
