Extend corruption fight to give, NLC tells Buhari

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president, Ayuba Wabba, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to muster the will and ensure that the corruption fight is extended to state governors, their states and people at all levels.

He stated this at the weekend in Uyo in reaction to the recent instruction by President Buhari that the Finance Minister and Central Bank Governor release the second tranche of London-Paris Fund to state governors to enable them meet their financial obligations, especially payment of salaries and pension of workers in their states.

Wabba said during the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria 4th quadrennial National Delegates conference in Uyo that beyond instructing for the second release of the London-Paris Fund, the President Buhari-led administration should also muster the will to make sure that the first tranche that was released is accounted for.

He said the present administration has to prove it is fighting corruption by ensuring no one with allegation of being corrupt is spared, “it must be at all levels, it must scale down to the states,’’ he said.

He further went on to say that there at no time in the history of this country, Nigeria, did it record the level of corruption as it is today in some states. He called on Nigerians as vanguard of democracy, to insist that their leaders be accountable.

He also called on them to demand from their state governors that the second tranche of the Paris Club refund, about to be released to them, must be judiciously spent.

Wabba said, ‘’we must be proactive by ensuring that government at the centre is on top of the situation and demand for accountability.

“What we are saying is that, let the government also muster the will to make sure that the first tranche that was released is accounted for.”

He therefore challenged Nigerians to make sure that governors of their respective states spend part of the money to resolve unsettled salaries, pensions and gratuities of their workers.

“Government should see workers as partners in progress, a people that create wealth, not as a liability. If not, we will not have social stability, cohesion and we will not get out of recession,’’ he said.
