Manchester United have advanced to the fourth round of the English FA Cup after beating Arsenal on penalties at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday night.

Both sides played a 1-1 over 120 minutes and the game was forced into shootouts, as the Red Devils won 5-3 in the exercise.

Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning penalty as Manchester United got the better of Arsenal in the thrilling encounter.

United had to play with 10 men for nearly an hour after Diogo Dalot was shown a second yellow card.

Bruno Fernandes opened scoring for the Red Devils on 52 minutes before Gabriel Magalhães equalised on 63 minutes for Arsenal.

The end result means Arsenal have exited the FA Cup in the third round for the third time in four seasons.

Elsewhere, Tottenham almost exited the FA Cup against a National League side, Tamworth.

Advancing turned into a monumental task for Spurs, and they came close to abject humiliation as they were held goalless at full time.

But the Premier League club fought hard in extra time, netting three goals to reach the FA Cup fourth round with a 3-0 victory.

A scrambled own goal from Tamworth’s Nathan Tshikuna broke the deadlock after 101 minutes, substitute Dejan Kulusevski added a superb strike, and then Brennan Johnson curled in a third.

In other FA Cup ties, Crystal Palace pipped Stockport 1-0, Ipswich thrashed Bristol Rovers 3-0, Newcastle defeated Bromley 3-1, Southampton thrashed Swansea 3-0, while Doncaster and Hull City played a 1-1 draw.
