FA CUP: Nine-man Chelsea beat Norwich on penalties; Wigan, Swansea advance

Reduced to nine men against eleven, Chelsea survived Norwich scare to advance to the fourth round of the English FA Cup after beating the Championship side on penalties at Stamford Bridge.

After a 1-1 draw at full time which extended to extra time and then to a penalty shootout, Chelsea keeper Willy Caballero saved the first penalty from Nelson Oliveira to help the Blues win.

Michy Batshuayi had given Chelsea the lead in the 55th minute when he tapped home Kenedy’s cross from close range.

But Jamal Lewis headed home Timm Klose’s cross in injury time to force an extra 30 minutes.

The Blues ended with nine men as Pedro and Alvaro Morata were both dismissed in extra time for two bookings each.

But before then, Willian was brought down in the area, and instead of awarding a penalty, the referee booked him for diving; and the video assistant referee (VAR) did not think there was an error in the decision.

Chelsea will now face Newcastle United in the fourth round of the competition on Sunday, January 28.

In the other 3rd round replays, League One leaders, Wigan Athletic stunned Premier League side, Bournemouth, as they advanced with a 3-0 victory at home.

Swansea City defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 to also advance.
