A delegation of Nigerian Senate is in a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari over the worrying face-off between the legislature and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris.

The meeting being held behind closed-doors inside the President’s office in Aso Villa is between President Buhari and a 10-man senate delegation.

Among the 10-man members of the senate delegation include former governors of Nasarawa (Abdullahi Adamu), Gombe (Danjuma Goje) and Akwa Ibom (Mr. Godswill Akpabio.) Also in their company is the Senior Special Assistant to Buhari on National Assembly matters (Senate), Mr. Ita Enang.

The Senate had raised the panel to meet President Buhari after Idris on three consecutive occasions snubbed Senate invitation to appear before it over the worsening security situation in the country.

They were also to meet Buhari over the impasse between Senate President Bukola Saraki and Idris over a criminal case involving some suspected cultists.

The Senate had on May 9, passed a vote of no confidence on the IGP, describing him as “enemy of democracy” for failing to honour its invitations twice.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, Senate Majority Leader Ahmad Lawan disclosed that Buhari assured them he was going to take the right actions on the issue between Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Idris Ibrahim, as well as address all issues concerning the two arms of government.

Lawan said, “Well, the IGP thing was one of the issues discussed on a general note. But of course it is right that the committee was set up after some incidents had happened. But let me say that the issues are beyond IGP/Senate affair. We have so many other issues that bother on ensuring that we work better with the executive arm of government.

“So, the IGP issue was just one of those issues that were discussed.

“Well, we have told the president all the issues that we thought we should discuss with him and of course those issues we were mandated to discuss with him and he has taken notes and would take appropriate actions.”

Expressing firm believe that the meeting would help promote better understanding between the executive and the legislature arms of government, the Senate leader said that cases of “misunderstanding” between arms of government are “normal”.

He however added that efforts were being put in place to ensure that “the executive and the legislative arms are on the same page”.

The meeting os coming on the heels of Senate President Saraki’s allegation that the IGP was plotting to implicate him and Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara in a murder case involving some suspected cultists.
